Life and Social Skills Programs

The Good Life Farm offers a range of programs that contribute to the health and wellbeing of young people by providing positive educational experiences and mentoring in a friendly and supportive rural environment.

Our programs are delivered in an atmosphere that’s conducive to healing and learning. They provide support for disengaged young people who gain confidence, self-respect and valuable skills that can lead to employment.

Our holistic and therapeutic approach is founded on the principles of animal based therapy. That allows young people to create bonds with the animals, and we then see this transferred onto their relationships with other people.

Importantly, those bonds are based on care, respect and love.

Our life skills and permaculture programs focus on interaction, care-giving and connection to not only the animals, but also the the environment, family and community.

We also emphasise the healing power of good old-fashioned hard work. All of our programs can be tailored to suit individual needs.

For example, we have conducted a successful program for young people on the autistic spectrum, focusing on appropriate behaviour and social skills.

Our Programs

Animal Studies

Known as an Animal Studies Taster Course, this is a pre-requisite course for students enrolling in a formal Certificate III in Animal Studies. It helps prospective students become better informed of what’s involved in successfully completing the Certificate III.

While open to everyone and all ages, The Good Life Farm’s program has been developed specifically to assist people;

-Who have been marginalised and have not accessed education, training and employment · who have experienced barriers to education in the past and need intensive support to re-engage with learning.

-From culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and those who require assistance with English as a second language.

-Who have limited access to learning opportunities eg from rural and regional areas · who present with Mental Health issues.

This program provides a basic knowledge of sustainability through rudimentary exposure to the 12 principles of permaculture, a basic level of knowledge and skills of large animal OHS (animal husbandry, food, water, shelter, cleaning). Other employment skills are also developed including:

  • Speaking and listening
  • Numeracy
  • Teamwork
  • Problem solving
  • Initiative and enterprise
  • Planning and organising
  • Self management
  • Technology

We’re very proud of the difference we make in young people’s lives with our programs. These courses offer more than just one-day or 10 week skills programs. We build positive, ongoing relationships with young people that last many years and we’ve seen first-hand that lives can changed for the better from our programs.

This program allows our young people to get a taste of what it’s like to live and work on the farm. 10 week environmental programs consists of:

  • Ponding
  • Web of life game
  • Permaculture theories
  • Animal husbandry
  • Communication skills
  • Teamwork
  • Leadership skills
  • Life and social skills

This program is a good opportunity for young people to escape from the pressures of everyday life.
